Virginia on a Whim

We left DC much later than we planned and headed to Mount Vernon in Virgina. Leaving as late as we did, we’ll probably have to stay over night at one of the hotels. When we arrived in Virgina, our first stop was the home of George Washington, Mount Vernon. The tour starts off in the Ford Orientation Center, which has a miniature display of the mansion and plays a brief introduction film. Then it was off to the mansion.

We had no idea the line to the mansion would be so long. We ended up waiting in queue for almost an hour. We were figuring we’d get in right away; we had no idea so many people were so interested in George Washington. If we would’ve known ahead of time just how popular this Virginia attraction is, we would’ve planned better and definitely left earlier in the day. While we waited in line, we called up one of the Virginia luxury hotels and made reservations for the night. They were really very accommodating and gave us a discount since I belong to the military.
When we finally got inside the mansion, we went through the Servants’ Hall and that’s when we learned we could not take any photographs whatsoever. We really didn’t do our research properly. Well, we really didn’t do any research at all. We walked through the mansion, well pushed through the mansion, as the line had to keep moving. We saw many rooms, including the room where George Washington died.
Once outside of the mansion, the pushing tour eased up and we got to visit the Potomac River from the back of the mansion, then we walked to the wharf, which was a bit of a distance away. Our feet were getting swollen, so we sat a while and relaxed. Once our feet felt better, we then saw where his wife Martha and he were buried. Not too far from there was a Slave Memorial and Burial Ground and from there we saw the slaves quarters. Then we spent 2 hours in the museum, because they had a couple of films to view for history buffs like ourselves.
We were so glad after the tour, to get back in our car and drive to our hotel. We were beat!
